Computer help!

Post by Timaaay! on Fri Apr 24, 2009 6:07 am

Thought I'd seek advice and hope a "computer geek" is out there. Very Happy My wife must have received a virus in an e-mail. Every one that she had in her address book received a e-mail from her (no from HER, but from this virus) that she highly recommends this site, www.*&^%$. This is some site in China.
ANY e-mail that she sends to ANYONE new, also sends this link. We have Panda anti virus, which doesn't detect this problem. We tried Microsoft as well as a few "free trial" anti virus programs with no luck. Wiping the computer is not an option as we have a few programs that we need and no longer have the disk. (I paid a few hundred bucks for Photo Shop, lent the disk to someone and never got it back.)
Does anyone have any ideas here?

You can try this; http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Run the free version, see what comes up. Adaware is another good free utility.

A friend of mine told me once that if you put an address in your mail address book like aaaaaaa@somewhere.com these Address Book virus's, that start at the top of the list will get stuck on this non address.
Nothing replaces a good anti virus, Adaware as mentioned is good and Free. Make sure the protection monitors your incoming AND out going email.
Also turn off the auto open feature in your Email program (mine is Outlook) This lets you decide if you want open the mail or delete it right away. Most email virus's must be opened to infect. Also delete from deleted box.

I'll second the use of the above program. I also like Spybot S & D:

Between those two programs and a current McAfee anti-virus and firewall I really don't have any problems

Also when you send Email Only send it with Bcc (That means. That way the address(s) are sent without revealing the address, and someone cannot garner them.
If you use Outlook or Outlook express, it will do a virus check for incoming and outgoing mail if you set it up.
