Great RCA Victor Ad

Post by moses_007 on Mon Feb 09, 2009 3:44 pm

I found this ad recently on eBay and just got it framed and hung on the wall above my RCA Victor 45 player collection. It is a super full color ad (10 x 13) from 1949 announcing the new RCA 45rpm system. It must have been in Life or Look magazine because of its large size. I like the way it shows how RCA pioneered color vinyl for the various types of music.

I'm searching for one of the console hi-fi players. However, I want one with an RP190 changer in it. I have one player with a RP168 changer in it and that's enough for me. I don't like how the 168 works. It's too erratic and sits down on the record like a fat woman.

I recently acquired part of my late uncle's 45rpm record collection, and I now have several early 1950s boxed record sets from RCA Victor, Capitol and Decca. My uncle collected big band music mostly and he was real particular with his 45s...there isn't a scratch on any of them. I was particularly glad to get an RCA Victor boxed set by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans entitled, "Hymns of Faith." There are three records in the set and they are printed on TURQUOISE vinyl. According to this RCA ad, they should be green vinyl. I have another record in green vinyl and I compared the two, and the Roy Rogers/Dale Evans records are turquoise, not green. I was pleasantly surprised with that find. The vinyl is absolutely beautiful.

Interesting, I have only seen the red records. I have several of them. I didn't know that they came in different colors. Is the vinyl as good as the black?

Don the vinyl seems just as good. Red was Classical i know, Blue I think was Jazz. ( or maybe that was green) There was also yellow. They were color coded for the type of music.

looks like the bottom of the Ad tells us maybe Larry can expand

Since paper will often yellow and ink will fade, what do you think of getting it scanned and printed with something like a laser printer and putting the original behind the copy? I have some Corvair ads that have turned over the years. Just a thought...

I have the ad framed behind glass, so hopefully it won't fade since it is indoors.

Here is a larger copy of the ad, and hopefully you will be able to read the color codes of the various colored vinyl. I found it interesting they called it "blues and rhythm" back then since the term is now rhythm and blues.
