For some time now I've been reading about how you can replace resistance line cords or ballast tubes with capacitors. I am at a loss to figure out just what type of cap to use, with or without a diode or extra resistor and if the cap should be film, oil-filled, a motor starter type, etc.

Currently I am using a small box at the end of a very short, heavy-duty extension cord that contains a few power resistors, an on/off switch, an "in use" light, a recepticle and a dial-type switch ...

Hi everybody, I'm new to this forum, this Zenith radio is my third old tube radio in my collection, the previous ones are a Sentinel and a Town Crier, both only needed outside restoration but this Zenith, even though is working, has a strong hum at any sound volume, my best guess is a problem with the electrolytic capacitor in the power supply, but before opening up the guts I wanted to have an expert opinion!

So here it is:

What could be the most probable cause for a constant hum coming ...

Ok so here is an idea I am working on for my website. Olds, if you want to give this a try then by all means, go ahead. It will build your website skills!

What I am doing/planning is taking several radios, say a common bakelite AA5, and maybe a Philco cathedral of some sort and start out with a simple photo of the radio. From there we take the chassis out. (here comes the fun) With the photo of the chassis we can make an image map. In other words as you put your mouse over each component ...

Crosley model 515 low volume

I recently picked up a half way decent Crosley fiver model 515. The field coil checked open, so I pulled the paper away to find very corroded connections. I cut those, unwound 1 turn from each end of the coil and soldered it to 2 new peices of wire. I checked the coil again and it checked at 3k, is this correct? It seems a little high.

The Radio picks up some signal, not very loudly nor clearly. It sounds distorted. Not bad paper cap distorted, more like it is in the speaker.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I acquired a Motorola 6y radio with the typical loud 60hz hum a while back. It used to belong to my grandmother and I remember that it used to work perfectly about 15 years ago. Once I opened it up I found a mess of incorrect modern capacitors used in combination with the old electrolytics. So I removed the improvised "repairs" and rebuilt the power supply stage with correct value electrolytics using the schematic as a guide. Problem is now that I get no audio except for a very very ...

This doesn't relate to my previous post, so I started a new one. Firstly, I've been going to the schematics quite a bit for the Moto 6y radio, and I'm a little confused. There are many resistors on it that for instance say "470MOhm". I would [i]assume that means "megohms", but the resistor color codes and ohm meter read out to be Kilohms. What terminology are they using to come up with that? Reason I ask is that this radio is a family heirloom and I dont want to mess ...

I am using my variac as part of a temporary battery eliminator. I have been told this can cause quite a bit of interference, but I think it's more than that here. I turned on my transmitter and found the spot on the radio dial. The transmitter had no input, so only carrier wave going out, and I should have gotten silence on the radio. Instead, it was a loud buzz.

It's simply a variac and isolation transformer all in one that I made. I actually used two matched 25.2 volt transformers from Radio Shack back to back (secondaries hooked together.) I had them laying around and figured I might as well use them, and it has the added benefit of dropping the voltage, so even though I have 123 volts from the wall, the most I can ...

I have been busy recapping several old radios during this winter season. Lately when I started testing the radios I have been disappointed by all of the noise they seem to receive on the broadcast band. Mostly the noise seems to be a high pitched buzz, maybe at about 600 hz? I began to think each of my radios had a problem with the newly installed capacitors.

I have an RCA 45rpm 8EY4 Deluxe record player that I totally recapped about a month ago, and I've been playing it often. Yesterday, I turned it on and it has a terrible hum...even with the volume control turned all the way down. I suspected a bad tube and pulled the tubes and checked them on my tube checker. All four tubes test very strong with no shorts. What could cause this? I would think if something in the amp was going to break down it would do so before a month of using the player. ...

I have a 1934 majestic model 50 and It has, from what I can tell a double volume control and it is made of carbon and I believe it is cracked. One part of the schematics shows the volume control as 645 ohms and another part of the schematics shows part of the volume control right off the antenna at 10,000 ohms. There are more than three wires coming off the control. Under each of the volume controls in the schematics it says 1/2 of volume control. Do I need the part connecting to the antenna ...

Hi all. I have a question that I hope some one may know the answer to. When a conductive rubber contact, like the button of a TV remote, no longer works because the conductive graphite substance has worn off, I've used conductive glue made for this in the past with great results. I bought a tube a few years back. It's very expensive and I can't find it locally. Someone has told me that you can simply apply a drop of Crazy Glue and sprinkle some graphite ( the kind used for locks) and it works ...

I just picked up a dirty but very original condition Stewart Warner made R-390A last weekend.

The only real thing unoriginal was the 2khz filter which had been replaced at one time. Thanks to a very nice ARF member I have recived and installed a more correct filter into the IF deck. I changed out the filter killer capacitor as well. I then checked the power supply filter caps. Good thing I did, and didn't just try to power it up. I found that while the caps weren't shorted, they also weren't ...

hello im new here on this forum, im trying to repair a crosley o3cp console, i get no reception just low static.

ive done the basics so far, changed electrolytics, all caps, all tubes check good, resistors are all good, and inspected all wires for corrosion. voltages are normal at tubes, i got the turntable working and placed a record and also got no sound, im wondering if a bad volume control would be at fault i have an extra one and am going to swap it. any help would be appreciated

Hello people.

I have a Motorola 65T21, AM and SW. I turn it on, and it will work on shortwave for a half an hour or so. After that, it will fade in and out and, eventually, will stop playing. It has fairly low volume, lower than expected. I can get normal listening turning it about 3/4 of the way up. The static becomes very loud though. It can't barely get AM, but if I put my hand under the table beneath it, it will play more normal for AM. It will do AM better with no antenna, out of ...

I Just purchased a computer stereo speaker system from goodwill for $9.00

The power switch is activated by holding down both the up and the down volume buttons. It doesn't work.

I found out after i disassembled the system it has a main circuit board that looks intact. no blown parts visibly.

I checked the bridge diodes and they look functional. One funny thing is if I insert the power plug into the power strip repeatedly it will turn the amplifier on and I can play the amp.

I have posted this on other forums,

but I'll post it here as well. Frequently on older wooden sets of the 1930s they used either springs or rubber spacers to cushion /dampen vibrations to the radio's chassis. There are a number of sources that make replica rubber spacers, but a cheaper alternative and one you can use in a pinch is to go to your local hardware store and get some foam rubber pipe insulation. It comes in various diameters and is easily cut with scissors or a razor blade.
