Don't have a signal tracer?

You can make one!

If you have a pair (or single) high impedance headphone set, you could use it, with a small signal diode and a capacitor for safety as a signal tracer.

You will need to do some measurments in order for the assembly to fit inside the New pen probe.

You can use the barrel of a BIC ink pen or other brand that has no metal. Its all plastic, which would insulate you from shock. If you have an old RS232 plug, there are a number of pins that ...

#1

Testing tubes in ac/dc 5 tube sets without a Tube tester.

This is paraphrased from Television and Radio Repairing by Markus 1953

Don't know which tube filament is open? Rather than remove each tube and test with a Tester try this approach. you could test in place using an ohmmeter and save time.

Be sure the set is unplugged

Turn the set switch on

remove chassis and invert to see wiring

Trace the line cord to where it connects to the set wiring, one wire usually ...

I had a really good day today.

Today was "Historic Day" at the Phillippi Mansion in Sarasota. The Sarasota Historical Society hosted this to raise money for building a museum downtown. The event included all sorts of arts and crafts vendors, both inside the mansion and outside on the grounds. There were also antique cars on display, live bands at the gazebo, Punch and Judy shows outside, and all sorts of other things. In preparation for the event, I was approached and asked ...

OK, in my battle against bad winter depression I'm going to start another radio, an RCA 66X3 I picked up. I hear they are good performers.

Under the chassis is an asbestos pad that I wanna get rid of or seal-either way, as simple as possible. What's the best way to go about this and not have jackboots and black helicopters outside?

Other thing is, one knob is frozen on the shaft, and I mean frozen! I've never had one I can't get off 'till now. Don't want to break it 'cause I ...

Every now and then the question will come up about how to re-stuff a bakelite block cap, which are exclusive to Philco.

Step one-Take a deep breath and relax. This is easier than it looks. You need to also get a schematic of the cap. Just look online for the part number or post here. Once you have that and you have the new inside parts, it's time to get started.

After you remove the cap from the radio, you have to gut the cap. You will find they are filled with a hard tar. I've ...

While on the ARF forum today One person has a problem with bad solder and was wondering how to fix it. Well again as usual the sight went down while I was trying to post my answer.

So I decided to post it here in the meantime.

In soldering, if the solder is heated too long then the elements in the solder separate tin vs lead. Another indication is a dirty solder joint. It may be more than just trapped rosin, could be oil, water, dirt, threads from brushing, epoxy, resin, fiberglass.

Also I know this post is a bit lengthy, but if you are new to this, please take a moment to review what I have posted. You might be quite glad you did later.

The first basic rule is to simply pay attention and know what you are dealing with. Always pay attention. Seems basic enough, but even I didn't follow that rule a couple months back. I had went to ...
