I have a Heathkit A0-1 Audio Oscillator that my father built in the '50s, I replaced the caps and cleaned up the switch contacts and it seems to work ok except the sine wave shows some distortion on a scope. I am a beginner and have no idea about how to troubleshoot this circuit to find the trouble. I've searched the internet and can only find info on how to use the audio oscillator as a troubleshooting tool, nothing on how to trouble shoot a tube audio oscillator. I have heard some great ideas from one of our members on some postings he intends to make in the hopefully near future. We may even add a new forum to the list.I'm thinking that one over right now.

We have more serverr space now, so, no worries there, at present.

Looking for advice on a method that works to polish up brown bakelite. Picked up a G.E. 115 today in great shape but case is dull. Tried various methods such as rubbing compound, then Mequires products(glaze, scratch remover, wax) Even wet sanded with 2000 grit first but still can't get shine back. Actually has a milky look to it on the top so I would say over the years it has been sitting in the sun. Also tried the Brasso on it as I read somewhere to try that.

Don't have a signal tracer?

You can make one!

If you have a pair (or single) high impedance headphone set, you could use it, with a small signal diode and a capacitor for safety as a signal tracer.

You will need to do some measurments in order for the assembly to fit inside the New pen probe.

You can use the barrel of a BIC ink pen or other brand that has no metal. Its all plastic, which would insulate you from shock. If you have an old RS232 plug, there are a number of pins that ...

All the electrolytic and paper caps have been replaced and 5 of the six tubes have been swapped with known good ones. The IF, oscillator, and antenna test ok. It has the old dog bone style resistors and some are out of tolerance (over 20%). Some restorers automatically replace all of these because they drift, others only replace the out of tolerance resistors. These need to be replaced before voltage ...

For some time now I've been reading about how you can replace resistance line cords or ballast tubes with capacitors. I am at a loss to figure out just what type of cap to use, with or without a diode or extra resistor and if the cap should be film, oil-filled, a motor starter type, etc.

Currently I am using a small box at the end of a very short, heavy-duty extension cord that contains a few power resistors, an on/off switch, an "in use" light, a recepticle and a dial-type switch ...

I'm going to mention two, because the first one is a mystery. I first saw it at a flea market held at a drive-in movie lot. I'd like to say it was a 1938 Zenith, and it might have been, but all I remember is it was a grand looking console radio with a huge speaker and they wanted $25 for it.
Philco PT-25 has low volume. Turing the volume control does vary the level. All the tubular caps have been replaced and resistor values are in range. The tubes have been swapped out with no change in volume. The set pulls in many stations, but the volume is low. Some times after it warms up the volume returns to normal. There are some mica caps that have not been changed.

From there we take the chassis out. (here comes the fun) With the photo of the chassis we can make an image map. In other words as you put your mouse over each component ...

Crosley model 515 low volume

I recently picked up a half way decent Crosley fiver model 515. The field coil checked open, so I pulled the paper away to find very corroded connections. I cut those, unwound 1 turn from each end of the coil and soldered it to 2 new peices of wire. I checked the coil again and it checked at 3k, is this correct? It seems a little high.

The Radio picks up some signal, not very loudly nor clearly. It sounds distorted. Not bad paper cap distorted, more like it is in the speaker.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I acquired a Motorola 6y radio with the typical loud 60hz hum a while back. It used to belong to my grandmother and I remember that it used to work perfectly about 15 years ago. Once I opened it up I found a mess of incorrect modern capacitors used in combination with the old electrolytics. So I removed the improvised "repairs" and rebuilt the power supply stage with correct value electrolytics using the schematic as a guide. Problem is now that I get no audio except for a very very ...

Hi guys

Looking for a recommendation for a used CRT tester to test the CRT's on two Predictas I own. A 17 inch and Predicta Holiday. Don't need it for anything else just possibly for any 50's era ones. And since my budget is tight at the moment "Cheap is good"

And if that 17 inch CRT tests good and the repair pans out I'll possibly need a screen cover as well. Right now however I'm concentrating on a CRT tester.

I'll post this on ARF as well.

Baby steps first though...

Back to the radio, on the bottom of the radio is a piece of paper that says... Patented in Canada by Zenith Radio Corporation in one of the following years 1946, 1949, 1950, ...

This doesn't relate to my previous post, so I started a new one. Firstly, I've been going to the schematics quite a bit for the Moto 6y radio, and I'm a little confused. There are many resistors on it that for instance say "470MOhm". I would [i]assume that means "megohms", but the resistor color codes and ohm meter read out to be Kilohms. What terminology are they using to come up with that? Reason I ask is that this radio is a family heirloom and I dont want to mess ...

My interest in radio began as a boy in the 1960's when I found that I could receive far away radio stations at night. I went to the local library (remember the Dewey Decimal System?) and got some books on antennas. I built two directional loop antennas and connected them to an RCA tube radio that my grandfather gave me. I used that radio for years to DX the AM band. There were many challenges with noise in an apartment in NYC.
